Later this year, RMLS™ will be transitioning from the Supra lockbox system to the SentriLock system. We’ve put together a brief video with John Ayers, Vice President of Subscriber Services, walking through the equipment and how to perform basic functions:

We’ve taken some photos of a Supra lockbox next to a SentriLock lockbox so subscribers may note size differences. As for weight, using the same scale at the RMLS™ office in Portland, the Supra lockbox is 2.2 pounds, and the SentriLock lockbox is 2.4 pounds.

So why is this a better lockbox? Now it requires a card that looks easily lost or dropped and a mechanical unlocking system that sounds like a toy?? A key pad that is exposed to our NW weather? A battery that needs replacement by the Realtor? None of my batteries ever died in a single Supra Lkbx!!!
Why not wait for some real new technology that uses a key fob that let’s us unlock the lkbx as we approach it???
Just looks like a sideways move to me and maybe a “mother may I” step backwards!

Thank you for the feedback. When a battery dies in a Supra lockbox, we have to send the box back to Supra to be replaced. That is also if you can get the box off of the house before it dies, if it fully dies with the shackle still on a door, you will need to cut the box off, or hire a locksmith.
With the Sentrilock box, you will receive multiple notices that your battery level is low, and needs to be replaced. If the batteries ever completely die while a box is on a house, there is also a tool called a power paddle that can provide the box enough energy to get the key drawer open, in order to replace the batteries. Batteries in a Sentrilock box last for five to six years on average, and the box doesn’t need to be removed from the listing in order to be replaced.
As for NW weather, there are other locations around the state that use Sentrilock lockboxes, including Lincoln County MLS, and in our discussions with members there, they have had no problems with the boxes in the stormy Oregon coastal weather.
As I show in the video, the Sentrikey can remain in the RAD, in your car, while you just walk up to the box and put in your code to open it. This should both cut down on potential loss of the key, as well as provide much easier access to lockboxes.
You are considering the inconvenience of a few in the RMLS office to the tremendous inconvenience to the thousands of agents?? Truly, you need to be the one testing it in a real life situation where you are leading a property tour with a purse, phone, papers, keys and several kids to watch after! I don’t want another gadget to take up space in my car! My charge for my phone and my ear bud are already using the two available spaces. The iphone works fantastic for this and has greatly reduced what I have to carry. Now I have to carry a stupid card, charger in my car to plug in somewhere and do not have the luxury of automatic updates to my “key”. Sorry RMLS…this is a huge bust!

As a FULL time Realtor actually listing, showing and selling houses on a daily basis I fully support this move. I am on the Board of Directors and was part of this decision. We truly were looking out for the masses of our membership and not a remote few. There was an extensive investigative process (almost a full year) and there were also public demos during that process. The SentriLock system will be better all the way around. It offers features that Supra does not offer. The boxes are designed to function in even worse weather areas than we live in. The RAD device is rechargeable which means it’s not always fighting for space in your cars charging system. I have used the fob for my iPhone for years and I for one cannot wait to eliminate one more thing to have to carry up to a house when I’m showing properties.
I Agree, I love how simple using the ipone is with the ekey fob on my key chain. I think this new system is a huge step back. I don’t think RMLS should make this change.
I have been following Sentrilock boxes since their inception and have also called many agents throughout the country who have been using them. They are in use from the extremely cold climate in Alaska to hot in Southern California and Hawaii. They have also been used for three years in Linclon County on the Oregon coast. There are not any issues with the lighted keypad’s exposure to weather. I have personally had multiple Supra boxes die that needed to be removed with bolt cutters. The box then needs to be turned in for key retrieval which takes up to 3 months. The last one I turned in took that long to only get a torn & empty envelope back (keys were squished out in the mail system.) Being able to replace batteries on a box getting low on power is a tremendous benefit and, if the box does die on a property it can be removed and opended with a portable device checked out from the RMLS office.
We will be among the first to utilize the RAD device. All of the other agents I spoke with around the country only used the key card and liked it much better than fumbling with a phone or the key we currenty use.
With ever changing technology in the wireless phone industry a system that depends on them will often be rendered useless after updates until the lockbox system is updated which can take from days to months. This system is stand alone and not susceptible to those types of interruptions.
The Committees and Board of Directors are agents who have been evaluating the systems and the hands down winner for technology as well as ease of use was the Sentilock System.
There are many more features you will be learning about in the coming months.
I drive a Honda Pilot and the accessory chargers do not charge unless the car is running so this new system, for me, is a HUGE step backward in technology.
Currently, my iphone key fob is in my glove box and since it never needs a charge it has made my real estate life much easier than worrying if the device to open the lock box is charged. I am not sure how anyone can look at the demo kit on your video above and say that this is an easier system than the Supra key fob system which doesn’t use any charges.
I agree this is a hugh step back in my option. Leaving all these things in the car is just another way for my car to be broken into. My Iphone was so easy, never had to charge it, the key fob was on my key chaing so I never forgot it. What a waist of time and more work. Why make the change this device looks so lame.
I disagree Todd & Cheri. The phone option isn’t always consistent by platform. The android I have seems to burn battery like crazy when on a showing spree (i’ve gone from 80% battery to 10% battery in a couple hours). In addition, the android has a fob that requires batteries whereas the iPhone one probably gets power from the 30-pin connector. As for breaking in, there is no street value for electronics like these so I can’t imagine that any self respecting thief would seek out a RAD. In terms of the logistics of showing, I like the option of not having to bring ANYTHING extra to the lockbox in order to open it. I also like the fact that there is an option for contractor access (as a listing agent, how many times have you had to meet a contractor you trust to let them in a property?). This whole form over function discussion is silly, I don’t care if this looks bulky, I just care if it provides better service for less money. This whole discussion came about when Supra went from the regular box to an iBox (key and box exchanges ensued and people couldn’t believe it, I guess some people just need to complain about something). That prior box exchange was resisted the same way and it increased costs to members. We had all these same discussions then, let’s just move forward and get over it.
I completely agree with Jeff. I can’t imagine trying to keep track of ANOTHER plastic card. Seriously…and now more crap to plug into my car??
This is shifting any sort of inconvenience from a few staff members at RMLS to 1000’s of realtors instead. I do not believe if you had your MEMBERS vote on this subject, that this change over would even happen.
any idea how expensive batteries are? can we buy a replacement at freddies? what type of system were the realtors that like the sentrilock using before?
interesting that a board consisting of realtors would commit not only themselves, but a large contingent of fellow workers, to a contract without firm and fixed costs…
Change is not always for the better. Sometimes it is just change. The supposed benefits of the new boxes do not seem ample enough to justify this change.
I appreciate the offer to exchange our existing boxes one for one at no additional costs to us. But the money to do this comes from one source: the dues we pay.
Also agree. Not to mention those of us who have invested in smart phones and their various devices that allow us to open the current boxes, while only requiring us to actually carry (maintain, charge, and update) a cell phone. I envision myself in a major bind frequently with this “new” system.

I agree. This is not a step forward. This change should have been up for a vote by all Realtors. This is unfair!
What happens when the lockbox is on the door of a unit inside a condo building? (Used in cases when a code can be provided for building access. It doesn’t sound like the card inside of the car thing will reach. Or if one is on a walking tour of downtown buildings and doesn’t have their car). Why the system change? Supra seems great and iPhone capabilities seem reasonable to expect.

Thank you for the reply. There are some instances where you may need to carry your Sentricard to the lockbox in order to open it. Although, we are pleasantly surprised at how far away from the RAD the box will open, but it is only rated to about 200 feet. The number of walls and other obstructions does impact its wireless ability.

Before you take this leap into the future, what sounds like a great idea might need to be tested. We have had the Sentrilock system since January and are very dissatisfied. The cards are plastic, and they warp. The RAD’s do not work with our cell phone service well at all. They are apparently a new innovation and seemingly not tested well. The batteries DO die and we cannot get the box open. The boxes sometimes just freeze up and we cannot get them to “wake up”. Many brokers have gone back to picking up keys. Supra sounds better… there are more details but we won’t discuss them all now… C.

Thank you for the comment. If your Supra Activekey (which most of our current keyholders have) dies, then there is no way to get into the box until you get the key replaced, which will take hours at least. If the Sentrilock RAD dies, you can still use the Sentricard to get into the lockbox. If for some reason you don’t have your Sentricard, you can use codes to get into the lockbox. You will even be able to use an app on your smartphone to access the Sentrilock lockboxes. This is one of the main reasons the board has made the decision to switch. There are multiple methods to access the lockbox, which should eliminate the worst possible scenario, being stuck in front of a showing with no way into the lockbox.
All of the Sentrilock equipment is under a full warranty, and if your RAD doesn’t work, we will replace it immediately for free. The difference from Supra is that if your RAD fails, you still have 3 other methods to get your clients into the property, without having to go to an RMLS™ office.
WHY? Aren’t we going backwards instead of forward?? I don’t want to have to have a card to carry around with all of my other stuff! Was there a vote taken to replace our lockboxes?? Why the change and how much is it going to cost us THIS time? What are the benefits?
Why can’t you let the Realtors make the decision? They need to be the ones making decisions like this, they are out in the field using the equipment! And paying there dues.
Please think about having the agents involved in deciding whether to switch. We have a good system now, why are you inviting problems.
I did a switch over with another board in another state, and it was very unsuccessful, and eventually they switched back to Supra, in the mean time a lot of money and time was spent and wasted doing the change.

I am a full time, dues paying Realtor and I was part of the decision. I use my iPhone daily to access houses and I am very much looking forward to NOT having to carry the fob and fumble around with that at each home. Being able to walk up and simply push my code will be a huge bonus. There were interviews done with MLS’s around the country who made the switch and LOVED it. I’m not sure which MLS you were part of that was unhappy but that was not the overall theme we received as national interviews were done.

As a full-time practicing Realtor, I was asked to preview and compare the Sentrilock system to that of Supra. I simply cannot wait until the switch! There are so many good things about this format that I think you will like. RMLS has spent a lot of time and effort to ensure that it’s members needs are taken care of. This includes getting extensive input from local Realtors as well as other Realtors utilizing the system throughout the country.
Exactly! We pay DUES….we are MEMBERS…we are supposed to have a say but we really don’t. Not ever. We are just TOLD what will happen and how much to write the check for this time…

I agree with the earlier comments. Why in the world would we migrate backwards? The Supra RMLS lockbox system is almost flawless and is supported by showing feedback systems and is well implemented. I agree with change when it is a change for the better but this seems to be a step back in time and technology.
I totally agree! Has anyone on the Board ever sold real estate and understand how we use these “boxes”. Just one more thing to manually update. I’m all for change, but this new lockbox system is “archaic”.

I’m thankful your experience has been flawless but not everyone has had the same experience. I’m as tech geeky as they come and love new gadgets and toys. However, when it comes to this decision, I fully support it. Getting away from a vendor that is constantly having to try and keep up with mobile technology is a win for our membership. The SentriLock system is mobile neutral. It doesn’t matter what phone you have which means you won’t be affected when Apple decides to change up their system again or when Bluetooth decides to change or go away.

Yes, I am on the Board and I sell real estate every day. I use the current boxes daily and very much am looking forward to the new system. It is not archaic at all. It will create a more stable environment that is not dependent upon what changes are made in the mobile phone/technology world. This is a huge benefit to our membership IMHO.
Why are the costs to the realtors not being discussed. How much is the box going to cost us? Are we going to have any trade in value? If you have not come up with a price, when will you, after you have decided what is best for us? This should be openly discussed if it is such a good thing.

Could you have found a larger lockbox?? This thing looks like a small suitcase hanging off the door. How many complaints did you have regarding Supra that made you feel that we needed to change? Another device to plug into my car that thieves will target? Where is the benefit to the realtor?

The new Supra box is larger (much longer). It is also very convenient for the box to open from the front and not the bottom. Never dropped a dawer or key opening a box? I was lucky enough to do it and have the key fall between the crack in the porch and house! The keybox on Sentrilock will also accomodate gate fobs and cards much easier.
Could you come up with a more cumbersome contraption? This is not an improvement – at all! Please reconsider this move. It’s technological regression and does not benefit the paying membership.
I’d suggest you come in and give it a try. It’s not at all cumbersome and quite easy to use. This box is far from a regression and as a paying full time Realtor, I look forward to this transition. The benefits of the new system are great.
So, who has stock in this new company? What did Supra do to tick someone off at RMLS? Certainly not the realtors so what’s really going on here??

The constantly changing mobile technology world is a continual problem. Moving away from that benefits us greatly since we will no longer be captive to Apple’s latest innovation (i.e. 15 pin to Lightning adapter). The new system will be a great move for us all. The benefits of the new SentriLock system are awesome. I’d suggest you go in and look.
Yup…agree with all previous comments. This tech. appears to be inferior in many ways. All I need now is my iPhone and my fob that’s hanging on my key chain. That’s it. A step forward would could have been LESS hardware, not more. This seriously smacks of an opportunity to sell brokers a bunch of hardware we really don’t need. Our RMLS is seeing some kind of gain here. Our RMLS is out of our control.

So, what do you do if you lose your phone, buy a new one, it dies while showing property or it updates with a new OS that won’t work with the system until it is updated as well? None of that is an issue with Sentrilock.
Hi Sue, the new Supra box is larger as well. As with our current boxes, whether or not the storm door closes if hung on the front door will probably depend on the type and position of handle the storm door has. As we know, our current boxes just won’t work on all door handles and some with storm doors.
What is the point of the change? This looks more cumbersome than the current Supra system which can be updated on the spot via the cell phone (I-phone in my case). The system for the car assumes the use of only one car. If you have neither that car or did not update via your computer, are you out of luck once at the house? What then? Today if an update is needed, the cell phone automatically retrieves it and updates in seconds with nothing more than the i-phone plug in from your key chain. This technology looks to be outdated in comparison.
This does not look well though out and I’m curious if you have polled your customer base to see what they want, rather than making any assumptions. If this is a cost savings measure, I for one would be wiling to pay a little more to keep Supra.

There will be a one for one exchange for Supra boxes later this year. The price of the Sentrilock boxes hasn’t been determined yet, but should be very close to the current price of Supra boxes.

Oh my gosh! Now I need bigger lockboxes, a charger in my card, a home charger and a card!!? All this eqyipment to replace my streamline lockboxes and little iPhone attachment the size of a mint?!
If you’ve ever listed a property that needs more than a single key in the box you’ll appreciate the size of the interior space the new SentriLock provides. There is room for condo fobs, instructions if necessary, etc. This is a good thing. (Side note: the newest Supra boxes are larger too without adding much interior key space) The RAD device isn’t a big deal and you could choose not to use it if you’d like (although I’m not sure why you wouldn’t). You won’t have to fumble with the iPhone fob while trying to get in the lockbox. Yes, I do use the iPhone to access lockboxes daily and it is a frustration. I look forward to simply walking up and inputting my 4 digit code and having the box open. It really will be better.
I agree with everyone else. This is not an upgrade. I would rather stay with our current system. I think realtors should have a say in all of this as we are the ones who use the products.

I have been practicing real estate full time for over 20 years and can tell you that RMLS did a GREAT JOB in getting input from active agents – I was one of them. I know you will find that this IS an upgrade from Supra. Lots more features AND when phone technologies change (like on a monthly basis!), the Sentrilock system won’t be affected. The tech it uses (SmartChip) is actually better in my mind.

Members of the RMLS™ Board of Directors as well as RMLS staff spent many months reviewing both Supra and Sentrilock products, and even did site visits to both locations. Based on all the data gathered, the Board then voted to move forward with the Sentrilock system. Many all of the members of the RMLS™ Board of Directors list and sell property, and use lockboxes regularly.
I invite all of you to come into our office and try out the Sentrilock hardware.
How many people are on the Board and who are they? Please list the ones that list and sell property. Personally, I don’t think something this big and cumbersome should be decided by the minority. You moved the offices to Timbucto and it is not a central location that we can just drop by for a demo! The video speaks for itself!!
There must be something I’m missing. What has been the problem with our current system? What value do we get back from our current lockboxes, & active key? We need to compare a little more before a decision is made. Give the pros & cons to us.
Myself, the longest serving Board member. I have been on the board since 1991. My wife Nancy and I sell 50-100 properties per year without assistants so I am very aware of the need for an easy to use system that has the tools we need for our business.
THis new system concerns me. We are being forced into a new world of tracking devices that can track our every move through RFID. IT is appearing everywhere and people are totally unaware.
Is the “smart card” a contactless smart card or an RFID? It sounds like an RFID because as demonstrated in the video, you can open a house from quite a distance. RFID is not secure. Prove me wrong or please clarify. I am not sure this technology is going to keep our listing clients safe, let alone our agents.

The Sentrilock system uses a smart chip technology, which is not RFID. It is the same kind of chip that is used in credit cards in Europe. The wireless capabilities are just between the remote access device and the lockbox, and do not use RFID.

Thank you for being the kind soul to brave all of these comments. I am still not sold on the chip technology just because it is European. I would need more information than that.
Also, with all of the contraptions that realtors have to carry today along with their chargers we are going to have to start wearing contractors toolbelts to keep it all with us. Our cars have only so many plug ins. This system is not good on many levels. RMLS needs to hear from all its constituents before they make a huge mistake.
Hi Diana. I’m confident you will embrace the system once you begin to use it. As I said above. I’ve been exploring this since Sentrilock was introduced 10 years ago. It is designed by REALTORS and owned by REALTORS.
Interesting hearing all of the different opinions, I keep hearing about all of the new features these lockboxes have but other than has a larger space to hold key’s I have not heard any details regarding the many new features. Maybe some details on these new features would help Realtors understand the benefits.
Will there be automatic reporting of a showing equal to what we now have with Supra? I agree with all the other comments and believe that we shouldn’t have to change our current system for something that will take a lot of effort for RMLS staff and Realtors in the switch over process, not to mention it seems like an inferior product to what we are currently using. What is the real reason for the switch? I haven’t seen one positive comment about this yet. Has this decision been made or is there still time to reconsider? None of the responses from RMLS posted here have really addressed the comments from the agents who posted concerns; just a justification for what is being planned that seems really weak.
Yes, you set how (text, email) and who will be notified. You will also be notified with showing agent information.
This is a huge step backward but not terribly surprising, given how archaic our MLS system is overall. I honestly can’t believe that anyone, especially those using the iphone adaptor, can see this as a step forward. Having that little adapter on a key ring that you always have with you, that needs no extra equipment in the car, no charging, etc, is about the most ideal scenario and works like a charm. I try very hard to be open to new technology, and change, but I can’t get my arms around this one. I love my iphone fob and can’t believe that will be going away. Huge. Step. Backward.
I saw enough on this video in the first minute and 20 seconds to know it seems large, cumbersome, and with more extra equipment than currently using. In this video, John states the Board hasn’t made all the final decisions yet. Please answer the question about why the Board is compelled to change the system. I didn’t see a justifiable answer in this blog string yet. The answer must be financial in some way, because it certainly doesn’t seem for convenience. Thank you.
Doesn’t it strike anyone else as odd that we have to make a change without knowing how much it will cost?? Haven’t we done this already once before as a nation? Like “we have to pass the bill so we can find out what is in it” idiocy?

The reason for the change is that our contract with Supra expires at the end of this year. We have been researching both systems for over a year now. After a long review of both options, our board felt that Sentrilock was the better system.
As for the financial piece, the exchange should cost you very little. There will be a one for one exchange in the fall of this year. That means you will receive a new Sentrilock box for every Supra box that is registered to you. You will also receive a free remote access device and Sentricard.
We do know that the Sentrilock key fee will be $33 per quarter, and while the cost of Sentrilock boxes have not been determined yet, it will be the same or very similar to the current price of a Supra box.
Why wasn’t this voted on by the members since we are the ones who could best judge and weigh the benefits to each of us? Can we vote on this change as members or is everything set in stone by the board already? This is a huge step backwards when it comes to convenience. I prefer to keep my iPhone Application and small adapter that is on my key chain. Anything else that requires me to charge it (other than my iPhone) is not a step forward and I don’t think any of the 40 RMLS Lock Boxes I use have had to be cut off a door due to a battery issue.
I use both the SentriLock in Lincoln County and the Supra system everywhere else. Plusses of SentriLock – (1) 24-hr access code for contractors and non-member Realtors. Thats totally cool, especially when there are repairs happening after a home inspection. (2) Totally bulletproof – it takes bad conditions well. Haven’t taken bolt cutters to one yet. (3) I wear the card on a lanyard which doubles as an ID as my photo is on it. Minuses – (1) Have to update it daily, not automatic. (2) Don’t get showing info as readily-only when an agent updates the card…not good if the agent takes off to Hawaii! This is a hard one to give up on if you…and more importantly your clients…like the instant notification when someone opens a LB. (3) Customer support – is good – nice folks in Cincinnati – but not as many hours for a live person as Supra. (4) Every time there is a Java update, you have to re-install the SentriLock progtam (unless you call customer support and they give you a workaround). One could say RMLS is trading one set of problems for another but lets face it, our national association has some bucks in this as SentriLock is a preferred Realtor provider…we’re gonna hafta switch sometime.
Hi John, Everyone in RMLS will receive the RAD (Remote Access Device.) It keeps your card updated automatically and communicates with the lockbox wirelessly so it automatically sends showing information to the listing agent, etc. when you access the lockbox. There will be very few instances where an agent will actually use the card. Though the boxes are the same this is a major difference between the RMLS system and the one you are currently using in Lincoln city.
I appreciate the Realtors who have taken time to comment and ask questions about the new Sentri-lock system.
I would appreciate a written comparison of the Sentri-lock and Supra systems being made available for the Agents to review – I’m assuming that this was done during the Board’s evaluation of the two systems?
Also, could you please make available samples of the reports that would be available to us, to track lockbox usage. Will the text messages that we now receive almost instantly still be sent to us when the lockbox is accessed? This is not only a valuable tracking mechanism for marketing, but also for the Seller’s security of us knowing that someone entered their home and who it was, if the Agent forgets to leave a card- but this info loses its value if it is not readily available right after the showings. What will the procedure be for a new listing to be ‘assigned’ to that lockbox? Will there be any direct communication between RMLS and the Sentri-lock sytem?

Hi Janet,
The Sentrilock system does offer both email and text message as methods of receiving showing notifications.
You can either set up the system to receive a notice as soon as the box is opened, or a “daily digest” type notice, that will notify you at a specified time of the day about openings all of your registered boxes during that day.

I am dismayed by the people complaining with no idea how the thing works or how much thought was out into it and by whom. It’s like a knee jerk reaction to kvetch and grumble.
I can’t WAIT for the change. My fob kept unpairing from my phone and I would have to take a battery out of the fob, turn off the phone, then start both up again and go through the code entering process again, hoping to see a green light, while my buyers were wandering all over. Just last Monday it took me 10 minutes to get into a house.
It can’t be soon enough for me. Also look forward to the ability to have a contractor’s code when getting bids.
I wish people would take a breath and learn before complaining, but I am sure everyone who wishes they had a say is quickly volunteering to be on committees so they can help make these decisions next time.
It seems that you are skirting around the costs involved for realtors. I see a 1 for 1 trade but that is all. How much for additional boxes? How much to replace that card if we lose it or it gets worn or broke? Also you keep saying there are additional benefits with this box, please share what they are, I’m trying to keep an open mind to the change since we have no say in it anyhow, but please tell us why its so much better, other than you can replace the batteries.

The initial conversion will cost you nothing but some time and inconvenience. You will receive everything you need at the conversion for FREE, including replacement boxes for all of your current Supra boxes, the remote access device, and your new sentricard key.
Certain costs haven’t been fully determined by our Board yet, that is why we aren’t releasing a lot of cost information. We are not trying to hide anything.
The cost that we do know is the quarterly key fee, which will be $33/quarter.
This is $1.20 more per quarter than the fee for an ActiveKey (31.80/qtr). This is $7.50 LESS than the fee for the Supra eKey basic, ($40.50/qtr), and $34.35 LESS than the Supra eKey Professional quarterly fee ($67.35/qtr).
We anticipate the Sentrilock boxes to be priced very similar to the Supra boxes. Our board is VERY sensitive to cost increases, and wish to avoid that however possible.
The sentricard keys are very simple devices, and will be very low cost to replace, like around $5-$10. As I said before though, this hasn’t fully been determined yet.
As the new Sentricards are not leased, there will no longer be deposits required when signing up for key service, which is another cost savings.
As for features of the new system, just a few are:
Larger key drawers inside of the lockboxes.
A simpler key that shouldn’t require as many replacements (which requires a trip to a RMLS™ office).
User replaceable lockbox batteries, which doesn’t require your box to be brought to an RMLS™ office to be exchanged, or sent back to Supra to have the keys removed and mailed back to you.
Additional methods to get into a lockbox in emergency situations.

Before I became a Realtor, I had two other high intensity professional careers. In all honesty, a career in Real Estate is right up there with them. So I do understand the anxiety around this issue which to some may seem so simple.
We don’t need one more thing to complicate our lives, or to think about in doing our daily routines. That’s what is behind most of this, I believe.
The board members and John have been very upfront and quick to respond to stay on top of this. That takes good leadership, which is so lacking these days. Thank you all. I learned a lot by reading the comments and responses also.
I did watch the video, and read what I could before making comments. I had most of my issues answered. I am looking forward to getting the new system now.
I just have one question: George Perkins wrote that the RAD keeps your card updated automatically. So that means that the device that connects to the computer is only an OPTIONAL way to update, correct? If the RAD updates the card, that would certainly make life easier for me. I was thinking we had to use the other device and that was going to be a NEW extra step. So if the RAD does update, then that eliminates another objection for me.
I wasn’t in Real Estate when Realtors walked around with universal brass keys for lock boxes. That sounds so simple doesn’t it? Keys were probably easy to lose or steal, but then the card might be too. HEY, nothing is perfect.

You’re correct, the PC card reader is simply provided as an alternate/back-up means of updating your SentriCard. You can update your card through the RAD either by leaving it in the device overnight, or by placing it in the device at any time for an immediate update.

Since you are making a major change, is it possible to ask realtors to put the boxes in an ‘accessible’ place, where one does NOT have to walk in the rain and then into bark-dust to have access to a key? That’s a change I believe many of us would definitely appreciate.

Currently using an iPhone with a key fob; this seems like an unnecessary step backward to more cords/gadgets I have to remember before walking out the door. This is really the next best step? hmm…
Perhaps we can pay for the upgrade from our over inflated PMAR dues. Placing on charger overnight, not having it with you in another car, and more charging gear is too cumbersome.This is change for change sake, not change for our convenience.
Looking forward to the change. From all the features I’ve read about, this seems like a huge upgrade on many fronts.
At the end of the day, it’s here whether you want it or not. In fact, there has been an explosion in real estate technology over the last few years, and we can either complain about it and talk about the good old days (like back in 2000 when listing were still inputted with DOS, or when we had to update our keys monthly or they didn’t work), and be left behind, or we can get in front of it, learn, implement and thrive.
I feel like I could write all night on all the ways the Supra lockbox system doesn’t work:
-I’ve had multiple lockboxes batteries die on me and have had to cut them off with bolt cutters, which is no easy task.
-The current lockboxes don’t have enough space for the keys- how often are we trying to shove that last key in there, or having to un jamb the key holder because the listing agent had the audacity to actually leave a few keys on a key ring.
– Has anyone ever tried to get customer support from Supra? I have on a few occasions-which was a pointless endeavor, as they don’t seem to return emails.
-I’ve had the iphone interface since day one, and always keep a spare, because I’ve broken a few of them. Not to mention the inevitable crash that occurs when you are in a hurry and the iphone just won’t update. While the iphone interface is a huge ugrade from the clunky key, I personally usually leave it on my iphone and stash in my pocket, which has led to a few needing replacement.
I’m pretty excited about the new boxes, and I think if we fast forward a year or so, most agents will look back and say it was a positive move forward.
I’ve read all of the comments and hope I didn’t miss the answer, so forgive me if this has been asked and answered. Will the new system be able to integrate with Showing Suite for automated showing feedback requests?

Sentrilock actually provides a “lite” version of the Showing Suite feedback system for all Sentrilock users, where listing agents can send a feedback request after a showing.
I passed your question along to them, and they tell me that if you are currently paying for Showing Suite, then you have access to an upgraded version of the Sentrilock integration of it, which will import new listings automatically for you.
AWESOME!!!!!!!! Yes, I’m currently a paying customer for Showing Suite. Great, now I’m happy and looking forward to the change. I have friends in other parts of the country that are using Sentrilock and have nothing but positive things to say about it. So, onward and upward!!!!!

We have just received notice from Sentrilock that they weren’t able to reach an agreement on the lite version of the showing Suite implementation that they currently are using to allow free showing surveys. Rest assured, this is just the free survey portion that will no longer be available, showing notifications are handled directly from Sentrilock, and are still happening.
Although, Sentrilock did assure us that if you have the paid version of Showing Suite, you can still use it with the Sentrilock system.

I’ll take the change, I don’t seem to have a choice. It can always be worse. I feel the same as many others though. I’d rather keep the Supra system. It works just fine. It just goes to show that no matter where you go the ‘man’ is always gonna stick it to you.
I sat in on the realtor panel that reviewed the two lockboxes, and was actually shocked to learn that RMLS decided to make the switch. I talked to many realtors that day, watched the full demo, asked questions, and came to the conclusion it was a no brainer to stay with Supra. In my eyes and in the eyes of most I spoke with the day this was evaluated, this is a giant step backward. I cannot for the life of me understand why this change is being made. Love my iphone little fob. Correct me if I’m wrong but it seems we are going back to the days that if a realtor doesn’t update their device, we don’t know about showings. Those notifications are not in real time is my understanding of this system.

Thank you for your comment. We asked subscribers attending that demo to fill out a questionnaire at the end, and Sentrilock did end up scoring slightly higher than Supra in those results.
The Board spent many months researching both companies, including site visits to the headquarters of both companies. In the end, they felt that Sentrilock was the superior product.
The Sentrilock system that we will be implementing does provide instant showing notifications.
Also, in most cases, you won’t have to carry anything up to the lockbox in order to open it. That being said, they are working on a smartphone app that will allow you to access lockboxes with your phone if you do wish to do so.
I would recommend you contact our training manager, Terry Romel at 503-872-8066 to set up a demo for your office. We also have demo kits at each of our office locations if you would like to see the system the next time you are at an RMLS™ office.
Can the RAD be mounted anywhere in the car? Meaning, if I wanted to mount it in a console, glovebox, or trunk, would that prevent it from transmitting wirelessly? Other than the fact that it looks goofy (and is almost too large for a door to open/close) it looks like a “functional” upgrade to me (by the way, can a cable shackle to attached to mount to a post versus the standard shackle?). Meaning we are getting more features for less money. That to me equals good value and may prompt Supra to up their game. As for me, I don’t even like taking my phone with me to showings as I want to spend 100% of my attention on the buyers needs. This would eliminate having to bring any technology distractions with me. Also, keep in mind that Supra has to have apps for every common cellphone platform (iPhone, Android, Windows, Blackberry, etc) which is expensive. I think this is a move in the right direction.

Yes, the RAD can be put anywhere in your car, although if it is behind metal and plastic, it may not be able to achieve the full 200 feet range that it is capable of to allow for the wireless opening of a lockbox. You will be able to open boxes farther away if the RAD unit is on your visor with only the windshield to go through to connect to the lockbox. You will most likely just have to try using it while it is in your console when we convert later this year. I am pretty certain that it will still work in most situations.

My impression coincides with the bulk of the comments from Realtors here. As smartphones (my iphone) have relieved major burdens by being compact, efficient and reliable, a system with more moving parts is definitely a step backwards. More junk to haul around in my car and wallet– scenario: stop, open purse, get out credit card, take to house with phone, keys, business cards, remember where you put it when back in car. Unplug gps to plug in charger. This cumbersome system could have only been devised by someone wishing to drive us mad. Can we go back when it’s been proven without a doubt that RMLS, having been sold a bill of goods, was misguided to switch?
I too am skeptical about the lockbox change, though I am sure that eventually people will adapt. I think the larger problem is that many realtors (full time or not) feel that they were not part of the decision. Perhaps the RMLS management/officials feel that to put something like this to a vote of the membership is to preordain maintaining the status quo; but given how high the fees have become, I believe more attention should be given to creating protocols for such changes that allow the ENTIRE membership to feel that they have a voice. Otherwise, we are left to suspect that either (1) somebody if making money on this!! or (2) the leadership either doesn’t care what the rank-and-file thinks or feels its judgment is always superior. Either way, the result is not good.
Why was it not possible to present information to the membership at large as the investigating people gleaned it (including, e.g., reports after visiting headquarters of each company); and then put the question of whether to change or remain with Supra to a vote of the membership?
I have read all the comments on the blog, and I am left with the question of whether some cost(s) of this change will end up being absorbed by the membership in the form of an increase in dues, or from our dues. It is entirely possible that we are being given a one-to-one exchange and other “lockbox cost” equivalences, yet the overall RMLS is paying something for the change and taking it out of a general fund paid by our dues. Can someone address this?
And also, is any money being paid, or are any “perks” being given, to any individuals, as a benefit for “greasing” this change?

I can assure you that there is no kickbacks or other “wheel greasing” happening. There are no hidden costs to subscribers whatsoever.
The costs of the conversion are being amortized over the life of the contract with Sentrilock.
The RMLS™ board of directors spent over a year visiting both companies, and surveying members to determine the best lockbox system for our subscribers. They feel that is with Sentrilock.
The switch to Sentrilock actually allows us to provide you boxes at a lower cost, and the new key service fee will be lower than both the eKey options with Supra.
Overall, with the lack of dependance on third party technology (such as Bluetooth), as well as the multiple methods to get a box open, the RMLS™ Board of Directors felt that Sentrilock was the better product.
You need to contact MLS systems that are using Sentrilock systems with RAD’s.

No, WVMLS will remain on the Supra lockbox system. After we convert to Sentrilock, you will need a Sentrilock key in order to access RMLS™ lockboxes.
What about security factor? It seems if I have to squat down to punch code in door lock, the likelyhood of others seeing the agent code is greater. Yes, you will also need the card but the card can be in the remote device in your car. If an agent leaves remote in unlocked car and someone has code ……. Another thought. What distance do you need to be parked from lockbox for the remote devise to work? Plugged in device with card in it just needs to be in vacinity for code to work?

Thank you for the comment. We believe that the likelihood of someone both seeing your code, as well as then being able to steal your key or RAD is pretty slim. If you feel anyone has ever seen your pin code or your key or RAD gets stolen, you can easily change your pin code on the Sentrilock web site, which you could even access from your smartphone at the showing.
The Remote Access Device (RAD) is rated by Sentrilock to work up to 200 feet from the lockbox, but in our tests, we have found it to work even further, especially when there are no walls or other obstructions in the way.
